The City Street Department consists of a 12 person crew that is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of approximately 450 streets. Totaling more than 170 miles of roadway.
Seasonal maintenance projects such as mowing, mosquito spraying and snow removal services are also provided by this department. The Street department is equipped to handle most all of the routine street maintenance including but not limited to filling pot holes, repairing curb and guttering, painting crosswalks, street parking, installing new sidewalk and street signs. Maintenance projects keep the department very busy and account for most of it’s time.
The Street department is also responsible for reconstruction and new construction projects. Mill and overlay projects that have recently been completed in the City are Main Street, North Street, Norton Road and numerous residential streets.
Snow removal operations are conducted when driving conditions become hazardous. Every year in the fall, the Street Department reviews the past years snow routes and makes adjustments based on traffic flows and congestion. Those recommendations are then presented to the City Council for approval. Though it is the department’s desire to plow all streets, priority is given to keeping emergency snow routes, major thoroughfares, major intersections and school zones open. Only after these areas are cleared and remain clear, will the crews move into residential areas.
