The Power Behind Nixa Electric

The City of Nixa owns and operates its own electric utility. The electric utility currently serves over 9,000 customers, 1,000 of those customers being commercial and industrial. The Electric Department has 14 full-time employees. Included in those is a superintendent and assistant, linemen, substation technician, apprentice lineman, equipment operators, and a three-man tree crew that includes two certified arborist.

The Nixa Electric Department purchases its power through Southwest Power Administration as well as Springfield City Utilities. In 2009, Nixa finished construction of a 69kv line which allowed Nixa to purchase power from City Utilities of Springfield. This gave Nixa the ability to have two sources of electricity, essentially giving Nixa customers a more reliable source of electricity.

The Nixa Electric System is a 12470/7200 volt system. The Nixa transmission (T&D) System consists of 4 substations. Click the Substation link on this page to see specific information for each substation. On a daily basis, the Nixa electric department maintains and makes any necessary upgrades to the system for better reliability. This includes but is not limited to routine tree trimming, transformer and line maintenance, street light repairs and new services.

Over ten years ago the American Public Power Association began a program to recognize Public Power Utilities who strive to provide the best service possible to its customers. Already having the distinction of providing power at the lowest cost when compared to Investor Owned Utilities, APPA also wanted to provide support for municipal utilities to achieve the highest standard in other areas such as reliability, safety, system improvement and workforce development. The Reliable Public Power Provider initiative or RP3 program was developed for this purpose.

In February of 2014, the Nixa Electric Utility was awarded with an RP3 designation. This prestigious award is held by only 183 other municipal electric systems in the country, only 10 in Missouri. The designation honors the hard work and dedication of the Nixa Electric Department and other Nixa City support staff who strive to provide excellent customer service for our customer-owners and citizens every day. This elite distinction benefits the entire community and over time, will result in lower insurance rates as well as support better bond ratings for the department. We are already enjoying lower cost by reducing system losses,   reduced outage occurrences and shorter outage times, all of which help keep cost low for our customers.

Net Metering

Residential net metering allows customers to sell energy they do not use back to the utility. This is done with the installation of a special meter and some specific switching at the customers connection. Please see the following three links for more information.
