Nixa Community Pool Opening Delayed for Repairs

Nixa Community Pool Opening Delayed for Repairs

May 25, 2023

2/22/24 Update regarding Nixa community pool:

The Nixa Parks & Recreation department continues working to repair and improve the pool at the Nixa Aquatics Center. We anticipate construction work on the repairs and improvements to begin in March. We do not yet have a timeline for completion, but we continue to gather materials and work with construction contractors to try to complete the project as fast as possible without compromising the quality of the work. However, we are excited to announce that a splash pad area will be added!

Last pool season, once we found out the pool was leaking and had to be closed, we worked to try to resolve a significant leak in the pool. Unfortunately, we learned those first repairs did not stop the leak and we discovered much more work would be required. In the fall of 2023, we hired a pool engineering company to work with staff to develop the plans necessary to replace all the underground water piping for the pool.

The replacement of these underground pipes will ensure the pool sees many more years of service for the community. Along with the pipe replacement, city council also approved several upgrades and other renovations. These renovations include an in-water play area with play structure, more concrete pool decking with shade structures and seating, and upgrades to the behind-the-scenes mechanical system of the pool. A brand-new splash pad will also be added as an expansion of the Aquatics Center.

We hope you are as excited as we are for the future of the Nixa Aquatics Center, and we look forward to having the community back in the pool as soon as possible. Please stay tuned for more updates.

7/5/23 Update regarding Nixa community pool:

Nixa Parks and Recreation is disappointed to announce that the Nixa Aquatics Center will not open for the 2023 season.  Parks staff have been working diligently with a leak detection company and Nabholz multi-service contractors to make repairs to the pool leak discovered in May.  Unfortunately, those repairs have not solved the entire problem.  Due to the ongoing leak, more time will be required to diagnose and repair the pool.  Unfortunately, this means we will not be able to open the pool this year.  Nixa Parks and Recreation staff will immediately begin refunding all remaining swim lessons/classes, season passes, and reservations that remain. No action will be necessary from those who may be enrolled in these programs or services.  If you have questions regarding your refund, please contact the Nixa Parks and Recreation office at 417.725.5486.

We will continue to work to make the necessary pool repairs in preparation for next year.  We thank the community for their support and we share your disappointment.

6/23/2023 Update regarding leak at the Nixa community pool:

Exciting news! The construction crew arrived onsite today to begin working to repair the leak at the pool.

6/21/2023 Update regarding leak at the Nixa community pool:

Nixa Parks and Recreation now have authorization to spend up to $100,000 on repairs for the community pool to resolve the leak. Nixa City Council held an emergency meeting today at 5pm where the only item on the agenda was regarding a budget amendment to allow for the emergency expenditures to expedite repair as soon as possible. Council voted to approve that budget amendment. Money for these emergency repairs will come from the aquatics reserve account. The purpose of this savings account is to cover pool-related repairs and maintenance.

Parks Department staff have been conversing with a contractor who has indicated they can begin the work soon, which will involve digging under a portion of the concrete pool deck to the leaking pipe fitting, assessing whether that is the only section of pipe which needs to be replaced, and whether any rock or dirt under the pool needs to be filled in before repairs can be completed and the pool deck patched with fresh concrete.

We do not yet have a definitive timeline for the repairs or when we will be able to open the pool, as the repair process will depend on some variable factors. We will provide further updates once the repair process has begun. Stay tuned.

Thank you for your patience as we work as quick as possible to get the pool ready to be opened.

6/8/2023 Update regarding leak at the Nixa community pool:

Leak Investigators LLC arrived on site June 7th and are helping Nixa Parks & Recreation determine where exactly the leak is located, so we can determine what is required to fix the leak. Working together with Parks & Rec staff and the Nixa Utilities Water Department, the leak detection company has identified a potential area of concern, but further testing is required.

The leak detection company has scheduled us for June 15th for the next test they need to conduct to try to pinpoint the leak. Once they have completed that test and the city receives the findings report, we will be able to begin developing a plan of action for repair. Until a plan of action is adopted, it is not possible for us to estimate when we may be able to reopen the pool.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work to resolve this leak. We, like you, hope we can make a repair and open the pool for at least part of our summer swimming season.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE: Nixa Parks & Recreation staff have discovered a significant leak in the community pool located at The X Center in McCauley Park. Normally, we would open the pool for Memorial Day weekend, unfortunately, the need for repair will cause a delay in the opening of the pool. The Aquatics Center will remain closed until the pool is in condition to be opened to the public. At this time, we do not have an estimate for when repairs will be completed.

We understand the inconvenience this causes, especially during hot summer months when the pool serves as a popular gathering place for families and friends. Please accept our sincere apologies for any disruption or disappointment this causes for your summer plans.

For those who have already made payments for aquatics programs, pool passes, private parties, and birthday parties, if we are unable to provide the service you paid for, we will issue you a refund. To request a refund, please send an email to info@nixaparks.com.

The pool did not have this problem at the end of last year’s pool season, otherwise, we could have worked in the off season to make repairs. In preparation for the summer pool season, our staff began filling the pool and soon after, we noticed the significant leak on Monday May 22nd. Nixa Parks & Recreation staff immediately began working to identify the cause of the leak. The pool is estimated to be losing between 50,000 and 75,000 gallons of water per day, which means the pool cannot function as designed. Staff have not yet been able to pinpoint the exact location of the leak because it may be in the pool circulation supply line which runs under the concrete pool deck. This location makes the repair very difficult and would require extensive work and hours of repair. Once the exact leak location is identified, the city will be able to contract a qualified business to make the repairs. We anticipate this to take a significant amount of time depending on contractor availability.

While we recognize that closure of the pool is disappointing news, we encourage you to enjoy the other Nixa Parks & Recreation facilities and programs during this time.

We will keep you informed about progress of repairs and any updates regarding opening of the pool. Please keep an eye out for future communications via email, our website, and the city’s official social media accounts.

Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding as we work diligently to address this issue. Your safety and satisfaction remain our top priorities, and we are committed to resolving this matter as promptly as possible.

If you have any questions, concerns or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us at 417-725-5486 or info@nixaparks.com. Our team is here to assist you and provide any necessary support. Thank you for your patience and cooperation, we look forward to inviting you back to the community pool.
