The Planning and Zoning Commission is made up of nine citizens of the City of Nixa at large known as citizen members. Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council. Each member of the Commission shall serve for a term of four (4) years. The Planning and Zoning Commission serves as a recommendation body to the City Council on matters relating to development activity in the City.
Duties of the Planning and Zoning Commission include the following:
- Prepare plans for the City of Nixa, which are directed towards the best development of the City;
- Hold public hearings as provided by law;
- Make and recommend policies to the City Council in areas of physical and social development;
- Evaluate and recommend necessary rules and regulations as provided by law;
- Hear and make final judgment on applications for Minor Subdivisions;
- Hear and make recommendations to the City Council on applications for Land Development Code amendments, General Conditions and Technical Specification amendments or addendums to the Comprehensive Plan.
The Planning and Zoning Commissions regular meetings will occur on the first Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. The regularly scheduled meetings are for the purpose of convening public hearings, making recommendations to the City Council, conducting business which requires a vote of the Commission, conducting long-range planning functions and other official business.
From time to time, special meetings may be called in order to process significant caseloads, to review works in progress such as comprehensive plan updates or minicipal code revisions, or to undertake a retreat or strategic planning session, either amongst itself or in the company of the City Council.
Visitors are welcome at the Planning and Zoning meetings. Those visitors wishing to speak may do so during the scheduled visitors section of the meeting. Visitors may also speak on any topic under consideration during the public hearing portion of a scheduled case. Any person who wishes to make their comments to the Commission part of the public record shall put those remarks in written from that truly idenitifies the author.
