After more than a decade without a K-9 program, the Nixa City Council approved funding in March of 2011 to purchase a canine and re-establish a K-9 Unit at the Nixa Police Department. Cpl. Shawn Clark was chosen to head the program. Cpl. Clark attended K-9 training in Alabama, where he was paired with the newest member of the Nixa Police Department at the time, Jannie (pronounced Yanni) - a two year old Belgian Malinois from Holland. Cpl. Clark and Jannie underwent an intensive six-week training program together. Cpl. Clark and Jannie finished first in their training class in Alabama. The pair then continued their K-9 certification in Georgia and took second in a field of 60 teams during a competition capping the certification process. Jannie is dual trained as both a drug dog and a tracking dog for missing persons. Cpl. Clark and Jannie are currently patrolling the streets of Nixa together.
