UPDATE 6-2-2020: Due to challenges that have presented themselves in 2020 to the police department, we will not be hosting a Citizens Police Academy in 2020. It is our intention to resume in 2021.
The Nixa Citizens Police Academy is designed to increase understanding between citizens and the police through education. Our intent is to acquaint citizens with law enforcement's role in the criminal justice system, and provide an increased understanding of the tasks police officers face in their daily work. With better understanding, it becomes easier for police and citizens to find realistic solutions to neighborhood problems.
The inaugural Nixa Citizens Academy began on September 13, 2011. Fourteen students met weekly for three and a half hours for 11 weeks. During the Citizens Academy, students learn about several different topics including: police history, policing philosophies, police ethics, constitutional and criminal law, use of force continuum, TASER technology, firearms safety and shooting techniques, traffic stops and DWI enforcement among others.
Students who enroll in this free course will interact with various department staff, while learning about their training, responsibilities, and work experiences. This program also provides NPD with an opportunity to answer citizen questions and learn how we can continually improve our service to the community.
