Crossroads to the Ozarks

Welcome to the City of Nixa, Missouri, cross roads to the Ozarks, just minutes from Branson and Springfield. Nixa is southwest Missouri’s fastest growing city located in Christian County, the 66th fastest growing county in the United States. Between 1990 (population 4,706) and 2000 (population 12,124), the city experienced a staggering growth rate of 157%. Currently, the City estimates a population of 17,000 persons, with population projections for 2010 suggesting that the city will surpass a population of 20,000. In 2000, the Census Bureau reported that 4,679 dwelling units existed within Nixa’s city limits. More than 2,285 dwelling units have been permitted since 2000 indicating a 49% increase in dwelling units. It is from this growth that the city anticipates, and is planning for continued and sustainable development opportunities in the commercial, industrial and residential markets.

Commercial Trade Potential. The Buxton Group’s 2005 Community ID identified 51,827 persons with $733 million in annual retail sales potential within Nixa’s 10-minute travel time market radius. Although the city has experienced numerous new store openings and job creation, there are significant opportunities yet to be met. The City, Chamber of Commerce and local commercial trade professionals are working together to actively pursue the attraction of additional retail prospects. As identified in the Buxton Group’s study, Nixa’s trade area is capable of supporting additional stores who cater to shoe and clothing apparel, home improvement products, entertainment and other community and regional goods and services.

The US160 and State Highway 14 corridors remain the most viable locations for commercial growth, but they certainly aren’t the only choices that exist within the community. Each site location provides prime visibility, vehicular volumes, accessibility and attractiveness to the trade area market.

Place of Work. The City is a proponent of the concept that 80% of the growth that occurs in the labor market, or place of work, occurs as a result of existing local companies. Although we are encouraged and welcome companies who desire to locate in Nixa, our main emphasis is placed on perpetuating our existing businesses. As a component of our economic development initiative, the City, with the help from local financial professionals, conducted a thorough assessment of existing businesses located within the local 65714 zip code. The City learned from this survey that there exist 550 businesses with well over 5,500 employees. Each business contributes to the City’s prosperity. The City in turn is committed to making capital improvement investments to support these companies continued presence within our community and celebrate their triumphs.
