The City Street Department consists of an 14 person crew who are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of over 160 streets, totaling more than 110 miles of roadway. Seasonal maintenance projects such as mowing, mosquito spraying and snow removal services are also provided by this department. The Street department is equipped to handle most all of the routine street maintenance including filling pot holes, repairing curb and guttering, painting crosswalks, street parking, and installing street signs. These sort of maintenance projects keep the department very busy and account for most of it’s time.

The Street department is also responsible for reconstruction and new construction projects. Mill and overlay projects that have recently been completed in the City are the Wasson subdivision and Harrison street. Old Bittersweet Road was recently lowered and widened to ease traffic concerns.

Snow Removal

Snow removal operations are conducted when driving conditions become hazardous. Every year in the fall, the street Department reviews the past years snow route and makes adjustments based on traffic flows and congestion. Those recommendations are then presented to the City Board of Alderman and they approve the final snow route for the coming winter. Though it is the department’s desire to plow all streets, priority is given to keeping emergency snow routes, major thoroughfares, major intersections and school zones open. Only after these areas are cleared and remain clear, will the crews move into residential areas.
