Testing and Selection

Minimum Requirements

• Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment

• Must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of Missouri at the time of appointment

• Must have a High School Diploma or GED

• Must be of good character, with no felony convictions, pending indictments, or certain misdemeanor offenses including any involving aggressive or violent behavior (i.e. domestic violence, criminal assault, etc) disregard for the safety of others, or misuse of deadly weapons

• Must posses a valid Missouri Driver’s License at the time of appointment

• Applicants do not need to be POST certified to apply, but are required to have a Class B certification from the State of Missouri at the time of appointment

• There is no local residency requirement

Selection Process Outline

The testing and selection procedure includes the following elements (in the sequence listed): a physical agility test, written exam, background investigation, oral interview and a pre-employment drug screen.

As of February 1, 2008, the physical agility tests are no longer scored as Pass/Fail. All applicants will complete each element of the testing procedure and receive a score based upon their performance. An overall composite score of 40 points must be achieved in the physical agility tests to move on to the next element of the selection process.

The physical agility test will consist of the following events with a total maximum score of 50 points:

Push ups - no time limit

Sit ups – no time limit

Vertical jump

300 meter run

1.5 mile run

Instructions and scoring for each test:

Vertical jump: The applicant will be provided a latex glove and apply ink to the tip of the middle finger on the hand of their choice. The applicant will stand against a wall, reach and touch (leaving a mark) as high as possible he/she can on the wall (keeping both feet flat on the ground).

For the jump, you must leave one foot planted, take a step and jump. The applicant will touch the wall at the climax of their jump leaving a second mark. The measurement will be the distance between the highest points of both marks. A score will be given based upon the following scale:

14.5” or higher = 10 points
14” but less than 14.5” = 8 points
13.5” but less than 14” = 6 points
Less than 13.5” = 5 points

Sit ups: The applicant will start in the “down position” with another person holding the applicant’s feet. Fingers must be interlocked behind the head for the entire portion of this test. The middle of the applicants back should touch the ground in order for the reps to be counted.

Reps will be counted in this manner: from the down position, up and then back down is one rep. If the applicant needs to rest it shall be done in the “up position.”

There is no minimum number required nor is there a time limit but the maximum that will be scored is 31 reps. A score will be given based upon the following scale:

31 or more = 10 points
30 = 8 points
29 = 6 points
28 or less = 5 points

Push ups: The applicant will start in the “up position.” Hands should be shoulder width apart, and the feet should be together or just slightly apart. The applicant’s elbows must be at a 90 degree angle in the down position.

Reps will be counted in this manner: down and back up is one rep. If the applicant needs to rest it shall be done in the “up position” by arching or bowing the back. The applicant is not allowed to pick their hands up off of the ground during the test. If the applicant needs to adjust their hands, this can be done by scooting the hands without breaking contact with the ground.

There is no minimum number required nor is there a time limit but the maximum that will be scored is 25 reps. A score will be given based upon the following scale:

25 or more = 10 points
24 = 8 points
23 = 6 points
22 or less = 5 points

300 meter run: The applicant must complete a 300 meter run [300 meters is three-quarters (3/4) of a standard quarter-mile track].

There is no minimum time limit for the completion of the run. A score will be given based upon the following scale:

71 seconds or less = 10 points
72-76 seconds = 8 points
77-84 seconds = 6 points
85 seconds or longer = 5 points

1.5 mile run: The applicant must complete a 1.5 mile run. The test is conducted on a standard quarter (1/4) mile track and requires six full laps.

There is no minimum time limit for the completion of the run. A score will be given based upon the following scale:

16:04 minutes or less = 10 points
16:05-16:15 minutes = 8 points
16:16-16:30 minutes = 6 points
16:31 or longer = 5 points

Testing Schedule

Currently, the Department only accepts applications when preparing to conduct a hiring process. However, we keep a mailing list for the various positions for those who are interested in employment with the Nixa Police Department. The complete process is under the oversight of the Human Resource Department.
