D.A.R.E and G.R.E.A.T Program s
The Program
Many experts in education and medicine believe substance abuse prevention must begin early. targets students when they are vulnerable to try drugs or alcohol. The lessons help children build their self-esteem, manage stress, foresee behavioral consequences, resist pro-drug media messages, and identify alternatives to drug use. It doesn't just tell them to say ''NO''; it teaches them how to say ''NO''.
Nixa currently has one Officer Brent Forgey
was introduced by the Nixa Police Department into the Nixa schools at the beginning of the 1991 semester. The program is directed toward students at the 5th grade level.
Since its inception, the curriculum reaches over 200 5th grade students per year, with visitations and instruction to kindergarten through fourth by a certified, experienced and dedicated police officer. A new program to help stop violence in schools was started in the sixth grade in Nixa is called V.E.G.A. (Violence Education and Gang Awareness).
V.E.G.A.
The curriculum content for V.E.G.A. is organized into five 45 to 60 minute lessons to be taught by a uniformed law enforcement officer, who is trained.
The purpose of V.E.G.A. is to help students and adults become aware of the destructive nature of gangs and violence to develop more positive ways of dealing with these issues.
Research has also shown that children learn best from other children. The more positive opportunities we can give our young people to interact with each other, the greater their productivity and development.
Junior High
Junior High is taught to Nixa 7th graders. It consists of 10 lessons with a graduation pizza party & video for all graduates. Junior High reinforces the core lessons taught in 5th grade and reconnects the students with all the techniques and values learned.
Nixa Program
Supported by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center . provides our youth with the necessary skills and information to say no to gangs and become responsible members of society.
In Nixa, is taught at the 8th grade level in health class. The program is ended with a graduation and certificates; a bowling party for the boys & a skating party for the girls.
